My Name is Maya Knowles, I have worked in Health and Social Care over Eighteen years. I joined WECIL recently. My role is Community Navigator for Somali, Refugees and Asylum seeker communities based in Bristol.
WECIL is an organisation led by Disabled people. My aim is to help Disabled people from communities, particularly Black and other minority groups. My objectives are to raise awareness of the support available to Disabled people and how to access help and support.
WECIL has an amazing team who specialise in Benefits Support such as Personal Independence Payments (PIP) forms, blue badges, bus passes and other benefits. We also have the Household Support fund. WECIL can offer financial support to Disabled people who are struggling to buy food or pay their electricity and other household items.
My role is a crucial one, my aim is to reach Somali communities, refugees, and asylum seekers. WECIL is a great organisation and has been involved with lots of communities. Disabled minority communities may not be aware of WECIL and the support they can provide. We know minority communities are not getting enough support. My goal is to reach as many people as possible. WECIL offers a Direct Payment support service.
What is Direct Payment?
“Direct Payment is funding from your local authority that provides choice and control over how Disabled people receive support in their own home or in the community. The funding can be used to employ the people you want to support you, to purchase a service from a care provider, equipment, or some other way you choose to meet your support needs.”
