South Bristol has been selected as the second Liveable Neighbourhood project in Bristol, including the wards of Bedminster, Southville, and Windmill Hill. This initiative, aimed at creating safer, more pleasant, and healthier streets, seeks to rebalance the use of streets between vehicles and people. From July 11th to October 13th, 2024, the council is inviting feedback through online maps, surveys, and drop-in events to ensure the community’s voice shapes the project’s outcomes.
Liveable Neighbourhoods are designed to make it easier to walk, cycle, or catch a bus, enhancing the overall quality of life. Potential improvements include measures to reduce through-traffic in residential areas, better crossings to connect neighbourhoods, more trees and benches, improved lighting, and creating spaces for community activities. These changes are intended to bring numerous benefits, such as safer routes for children to school, quieter and more pleasant streets, a more active and healthier population, reduced isolation, and cleaner air.
The focus on South Bristol for this project arises from the high demand for walking and cycling routes and its proximity to significant developments like Bedminster Green and Temple Quarter. The local council ward members have actively advocated for this project, highlighting the community’s eagerness for such improvements.
For Disabled people, the Liveable Neighbourhood project may represent a significant step towards greater accessibility and inclusivity. The proposed measures to reduce traffic and improve crossings can make a substantial difference in the daily lives of Disabled residents, ensuring safer and more accessible routes for everyone. However, to ensure that inclusion is at the heart of the final plans, it is vital that Disabled people contribute to the consultation. Our feedback is crucial in shaping a neighbourhood that is truly accessible and inclusive. By engaging in the consultation process, you can help ensure that the specific needs of Disabled people are considered and addressed in the final plans.
To provide your feedback, visit the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood engagement webpage. There, you can contribute to the online map, complete surveys, and find information about drop-in events. Your input will help create a neighbourhood that not only meets the needs of the broader community but also supports the independence and wellbeing of Disabled residents.
The South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood project is a promising initiative that aims to enhance the quality of life for all residents. By participating in the consultation, you can ensure that the voices of Disabled people are heard and that the final design is inclusive and accessible. Together, we can create a safer, healthier, and more connected community in South Bristol.
