A new initiative in Bristol is offering much-needed support for fathers of autistic children by providing a relaxed space to meet, share experiences, and form friendships. The Bristol Autism Support Dads’ Group organises monthly pub meet-ups across the city, helping dads connect with others who truly understand the challenges and joys of parenting an autistic child.
A Space to Talk, A Chance to Connect
Parenting an autistic child can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also come with unique challenges, including navigating education, healthcare, and social settings that aren’t always inclusive. While there are many support groups aimed at parents generally, fathers often find fewer opportunities to connect with others in a similar position.
Bristol Autism Support (BAS) have recognised the need for a space specifically for dads and male carers, BAS has launched two monthly informal pub meet-ups in different parts of Bristol:
- South Bristol Meet-Up – First Thursday of every month at The Lodekka in Brislington.
- North Bristol Meet-Up – Third Thursday of every month at The Crafty Cow on Gloucester Road.
These events provide an opportunity for dads to talk openly about their experiences, seek advice, or simply enjoy a night out with people who “get it.”
‘It’s Just a Safe Space’
One of the key aspects of these meet-ups is the informal and relaxed atmosphere. There’s no structured agenda, no pressure to share, and no judgement—just a friendly environment where dads can talk over a drink, knowing they are among people who understand the unique challenges of raising an autistic child.
“It’s just a safe space for dads to chat about anything and everything,” said one of the group organisers. “Sometimes the conversations are about autism, but other times it’s just a chance to have a break, talk about football, work, or anything else on your mind.”
For many dads, this kind of social support can be crucial. Fathers of autistic children may often feel isolated, particularly if they are juggling work commitments, additional caregiving responsibilities, or struggling to find services that meet their child’s needs. By providing a space specifically for men, the meet-ups help break down barriers to support that dads might not otherwise seek out.
No Pressure, Just Drop In
The great thing about the BAS Dads’ Group meet-ups is that they are completely informal. There’s no need to book, no membership required, and no expectation—just turn up, grab a drink, and join in the conversation.
Anyone attending for the first time can look for the BAS sign on the table or spot the organisers wearing BAS lanyards. The group is also active online, with a dedicated Facebook group for dads and male carers to continue conversations, share advice, and offer support between meet-ups.
