We are delighted to announce the appointment of Kate Walker as WECIL’s new Head of Children and Young People (CYP). Kate steps into the role after serving as Children and Young People Manager since May 2023, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the development and growth of our services for Disabled children and young people.

Kate has played an instrumental role in shaping and strengthening the CYP department over the past two years. She has successfully overseen the B&NES Short Breaks and Listening Partnership, ensuring that young people and their families receive high-quality, inclusive support. Her leadership has also been pivotal in driving the department’s strategic growth, fostering strong partnerships with commissioners, and contributing significantly to the wider WECIL Management Team.

With over 15 years of experience in social care management across Somerset, Bristol, and Bath, Kate brings an extensive background in ensuring high quality support for Disabled people of all ages. Prior to her current role, she worked as a Support Services Manager at the Bath and North East Somerset Carers Centre, where she led the delivery of support services for unpaid carers. Earlier in her career, she was a Youth Services Inclusion Worker at WECIL, coordinating Short Breaks for Disabled children and young people, and has also held key roles at Action for Children and Bradbury House.

Kate’s deep understanding of the CYP team’s work, alongside her strategic vision and passion for the services, make her an outstanding fit for WECIL’s Senior Leadership Team. She is known for her strong relationships with young people, their families, the commissioners of our services, and the dedicated CYP team. Her commitment to co-production and inclusion is evident in her leadership of The Listening Partnership, which continues to elevate the voices of Disabled young people across the West of England.

I am incredibly excited to step into the role as Head of Children and Young People at WECIL. It’s been a privilege to be part of such an inspiring team, and I’m passionate about continuing to build on the fantastic work we’ve done to support Disabled children and young people and their families. I’m committed to ensuring that their voices are heard, their needs are met, and that we keep pushing for inclusive, high-quality services that truly make a difference in their lives. I’m also looking forward to working closely with my colleagues both within WECIL and across the sector to strengthen our partnerships, share best practices, and continue driving positive change for Disabled children and young people.
