Bristol Stands United: A Community Defiant in the Face of Far-Right Violence

This week, Bristol has been in the headlines because of a troubling surge in far-right violence, leaving many in our community feeling unsafe and under threat. However, what the headlines eventually showed was a powerful and heartening show of solidarity, with thousands standing together to defend our city’s core values of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect.

The far-right activists came to bring violence to our street, aiming to spread fear and hatred, particularly targeting racially minoritised communities and those who seek sanctuary in Bristol. Their actions, which included threats of violence against key community support organisations, including key allies of WECIL, were deeply unsettling. WECIL unequivocally condemn these acts and stand in solidarity with all those who have been targeted.

Our community, however, did not stand idly by. Bristolians from all walks of life came together in massive counter-demonstrations, far outnumbering the far-right and demonstrating that Bristol will not be a city that tolerates hate.

And it didn’t take the most eagle-eyed of you to spot our Chair holding a placard that read “Our City of Sanctuary”, alongside another protester carrying a sign that said “Grannies Against Fascism”, which seemed to feature on almost every news outlet! This image has become emblematic of Bristol’s collective spirit—a city where people come together to protect each other.

As a Disabled People’s Organisation, we are acutely aware of how racism and ableism intersect, exacerbating the barriers faced by many in our community. The violence we witnessed this week is not isolated from the oppression that Disabled people experience; it is part of the same systemic issues that seek to marginalise and silence us.

However, in unity, we find our strength. By standing together with our allies across all lines of difference, we reaffirm our commitment to justice and equality for all.

In particular, we want to acknowledge our partners in the advice sector, who have been vital in supporting the most vulnerable members of our community during this turbulent time. Although some advice centers and community hubs were threatened with violence, they have continued their work undeterred, ensuring that those who need help can still access it. This resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the strength and determination of Bristol’s community sector, and the defense of these key organisations shows just how valued they are by the community at large.

Bristol’s response to this far-right violence shows the power of collective action. Together, we can and will protect our city’s values, ensuring that Bristol remains a place of sanctuary and inclusion for all who call it home. WECIL is committed to continuing this work, standing in solidarity with all those who face discrimination and working towards a future where everyone is safe, valued, and included.
