About WECIL
WECIL is proud to be a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), which means we are led by Disabled people, for Disabled people. At least 75% of our Board must be Disabled people, ensuring that our leadership is rooted in lived experience. This principle is at the heart of everything we do—shaping services, influencing policy, and advocating for real change. By joining our Board, you’ll be part of a movement that champions authentic representation and strengthens the voice of Disabled people in decision-making.
Our mission is to empower Disabled people to lead independent lives and create meaningful change. As a trustee, you’ll help to shape the future of an organisation that is not only committed to disability equality, but also deeply connected to the communities we serve.

What Does a Trustee Do?
Trustees are responsible for the strategic leadership of WECIL, ensuring we stay true to our mission and values. This includes:
- Providing oversight and guidance on strategy, governance, and financial sustainability.
- Championing disability equality and advocating for the rights of Disabled people.
- Helping to shape and monitor WECIL’s services, ensuring they meet the needs of our communities.
- Contributing insight and lived experience as a Disabled person to help shape WECIL’s strategic direction and advocacy work.
- Attending board meetings, engaging with WECIL’s leadership team, and contributing expertise in key areas such as finance, HR, or policy.
Whether you have prior trustee experience or are stepping into this role for the first time, we welcome applications from those who share our passion for disability rights and inclusive leadership.
Make a Real Impact
Being a trustee at WECIL is more than just a governance role—it’s an opportunity to be part of a movement for disability equality. Here’s why you should join us:
- Influence Meaningful Change: Your input will directly shape the policies and services that impact thousands of Disabled people across the region.
- Join a Community of Change-Makers: Work alongside a passionate board, dedicated staff, and an engaged membership, all committed to positive change.
- Professional Growth & Leadership: Gain valuable experience and insights in strategic leadership, governance, and policy-making.
- Support & Training: We provide guidance and development opportunities to help you succeed in your trustee role.
We want trustees who bring energy, ideas, and lived or professional experience to the table. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Why Disabled People’s Organisations Matter
WECIL is a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), meaning we are led by Disabled people, for Disabled people. This lived experience is fundamental to our approach.
- Authentic Advocacy: Our leadership ensures that decisions are driven by those who understand the realities of disability first-hand.
- Policy & Rights-Based Change: We campaign on issues that affect Disabled people’s daily lives, from employment rights to accessible services.
- Community-Led Services: We shape and deliver support based on real needs, ensuring that Disabled people have control over their own lives.
WECIL is part of a national network of Disabled People’s Organisations working collectively to influence policy and drive systemic change. As a trustee, you’ll be supporting not just our local work but also our contribution to national conversations on disability rights, independent living, and inclusion.
